BOSTON, MA - Today, Boston City Councilor Michael Flaherty hosted a community cookout at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in East Boston, alongside the East Boston Community Soup Kitchen, which was conducting its weekly food distribution operation concurrently. The Councilor was on-site grilling hot dogs for those in attendance. The BPD Ice Cream Truck was also present handing out ice cream sandwiches.

There have been concerning reports of large house parties in South Boston that are disruptive to the neighborhood. Residents have highlighted noise and trash removal issues as negatively impacting the quality of life for our residents. This hearing order aims to discuss the possibility of substantially increasing the fines for large house parties, so that the city can ensure that public health and noise regulations are followed.

BOSTON, MA - Last week, Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty, Chair of the Council’s Committee on the Community Preservation Act, held a hearing to review and recommend passage of the appropriation of over $25,500,000 in FY21 Community Preservation Fund revenues. The City of Boston’s Community Preservation Committee recommended these funds be used to support 67 projects across the city. This year, over $13M will be used to support affordable housing projects; over $5M for historic preservation projects; and over $6M for projects focused on the creation and preservation of recreational use and open space projects. Boston Year 13 provides an innovative, no-cost, accelerated pathway for underrepresented young people to college and high-wage jobs in Boston’s innovation economy.
Boston, MA - Digital Ready announced the finalization of the first cohort of students to begin Boston Year 13, a first of its kind partnership with Wentworth Institute of Technology with support from the Barr Foundation, Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael Flaherty and numerous industry partners including Triumph Modular, Global Partners, Autodesk, Microsoft, and many more. Boston Year 13 is an innovative fellowship for recent Boston Public School graduates. The year-long fellowship is designed to ignite students’ passions and equip them with the skills, work experience and professional networks necessary to navigate a complex, technology-driven world while connecting them to high-wage jobs in Boston’s thriving innovation economy. The inaugural cohort of 25 Year 13 (Y13) students hail from 14 different Boston public high schools throughout the city and is composed of students that are vastly underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, especially women, Black and Latinx students. FLAHERTY VOTES TO PASS LEGISLATION TO INCREASE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND JOB TRAININGBoston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty, Chair of the Committee on Government Operations, has recommended passage of An Act to Further Leverage Commercial Development to Build Housing, Create Jobs, and Preserve Inclusionary Development. The Act, which is a home rule petition sponsored by Mayor Martin J. Walsh, seeks to provide the City of Boston with the ability to make adjustments to the Linkage formula and threshold for application, eliminating the restriction on making adjustments only once every three years based on Consumer Price Index (CPI), and linking the threshold to Article 80; and to codify the City of Boston’s Inclusionary Development Policy (IDP) into the Zoning Code, allowing Boston to maintain its ability to secure IDP obligations from residential projects, regardless of zoning approvals. The recommendation for passage of this proposal comes during a time where greater affordable housing and access to jobs continues to be in high demand.

Flaherty filed a text amendment to the City of Boston Zoning Code regarding Cannabis Establishments to provide clarity on a 2016 text amendment that created a half-mile buffer zone between cannabis establishments. The text amendment intended to ensure that cannabis establishments were sited in an equitable manner and that one community or neighborhood does not host a cluster of cannabis establishments.
