Public Safety
As a former Assistant District Attorney, Michael prioritizes public safety. He supports a holistic approach to public safety, addressing crime and the underlying factors that contribute to it such as mental health and drug addiction.
Michael recognizes we can’t arrest our way out of the problems these factors create. He continues to call for more and better drug treatment options for those caught in the cycle of dependence and despair which fuels most of Boston’s street violence.
As Chair of the Government Operations Committee, Michael helped pass legislation sponsored by the Mayor banning replica firearms and tightening restrictions on possessing unlicensed firearms. As City Councilor, Michael has worked to fight gun violence and unlawful gun ownership in Boston, making public safety one of his top priorities.

Public Health
Michael works every day to fight the opioid epidemic, support mental health efforts, and improve access to health care across the city. Every Bostonian deserves to live a healthy, fulfilling life and Michael will continue to fight for expanded addiction and recovery services, mental health resources, and to support our community health centers to achieve this goal.
Michael believes rebuilding of the Long Island bridge and reopening its the addiction services facilities is central to addressing the opioid crisis in Boston. He is working with the Mayor to ensure the bridge is rebuilt.
In 2015, Michael guided the legislation banning the use of all tobacco products at all ballparks and public recreational areas. This was a critical step in fighting youth tobacco addiction.
In 2018, Michael sponsored an ordinance to provide special parking permits for in-home healthcare providers. Without these permits it is nearly impossible for the homebound to receive the medical care they need in their homes, because their healthcare providers were unable to find parking in Boston’s neighborhoods for those without a resident sticker.
