On Tuesday, June 21st at 10:00AM, the City Council Committee on Government Operations will hold a hearing to discuss reinstating a program that will allow City of Boston employees to use paid leave time to donate blood. Recent tragedies like the shooting in Orlando have drawn more attention to the need for blood, but I want to reiterate that the need is constant and at times can be the single most important factor in saving a life.
With so much gun violence plaguing our nation, donating blood presents an opportunity for individuals to perform a crucial act of service for those in need.
I believe that with proper oversight, the City of Boston can implement a reasonable paid leave policy to encourage greater civic participation in blood drives and assist in lifesaving efforts nationwide.
The public is welcome to attend the hearing or send written testimony to Michael.Flaherty@boston.gov
