Councilor seeks more outreach workers
The Boston Globe, May 9, 2007
Councilor Michael F. Flaherty wants to hire eight additional outreach workers next year, double the number the mayor has proposed, for four high schools in areas most affected by violence. The proposal, which would cost $285,000 to implement and goes before the City Council today, would assign two workers each -- one male, one female -- at the Dorchester Education Complex and at Charlestown, Jeremiah Burke, and Madison Park high schools. Flaherty said he hopes stationing the workers at the schools will allow them to mentor students, calm violence, and improve graduation rates. The city has 24 outreach workers.
