City officials are reaching out to the families of two Dorchester parochial schools that will close at the end of this school year.

St. Peter's and St. Kevin's schools will both close under the "2010 Initiative," a plan by the Archdiocese to consolidate schools in Dorchester and Mattapan into one regional school on five campuses, all offering pre K-8.

The five campuses that will comprise Pope John Paul II Catholic Academy include St. Margaret's, St. Ann's, St. Gregory's, St. Angela's and St. Mark's.

This week, school officials are holding meetings for parents about enrolling in public schools. City Councilor Michael Flaherty said he's ordering a hearing with Superintendent Carol Johnson to discuss the affect on the city's school system.

Council President Maureen Feeney's spokesman Justin Holmes said the changes should help the Catholic schools deal with decreasing enrollments, but "the challenge today is that we're very sad."
